Epoxy resin is a synthetic resin that can be used for many different types of art and craft projects, such as model making, water effects, resin jewelry, encapsulation, and quick repairs. Epoxy resin is made by mixing two matched components. When the liquid resin is mixed with its hardener, a chemical reaction is set in motion that usually takes 24 hours. Mixing of the two components must be as precise as possible to avoid strange or undesirable behavior, such as mixtures that do not cure, curing times longer than 24 hours, or flexible cured parts.
Colorants for resins can be added, as well as many other types of fillers such as pigments, glitter powders and others. Fillers must be compatible and resistant to the temperatures generated during curing. The components must be mixed thoroughly so that a wooden stick or spoon can be used to help make the mixture. It is advisable not to shake during the process to avoid the formation of air bubbles that remain trapped. The working time indicates the period of time in which the epoxy resin can be processed after mixing and depends on the amount of mixed product. The larger the amount mixed, the shorter the processing time, which is usually about 20-60 minutes. A warm environment also shortens the processing time and speeds up the reaction, while a cold environment delays it.
